State troopers are investigating a crash where they say a Massena man struck and killed a woman while she was crossing the highway.
The collision occurred on state Route 12, just north of Cherry Street, in the Town of West Turin, Lewis County, on Monday around 1:28 a.m.
Troopers say a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, operated by James T. Ashley, 29, from Massena was traveling south on state Route 12 when he approached a tractor-trailer parked along the north shoulder of the roadway across from the entrance of a gas station. A female passenger from the tractor-trailer began to walk across the roadway and into the path of the vehicle, according to troopers.
The pedestrian was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica by ambulance where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.
The name of the pedestrian is being held until next of kin is notified. The investigation is continuing, troopers said.
