POTSDAM – In a tribute to British composer Benjamin Britten, Crane School of Music faculty member Anna Hendrickson performs on oboe with guest artists Natasha Farny, cello, and Kuang-Hao Huang, piano, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 in Hosmer Concert Hall.

Works by Britten, composer of some of the most moving pieces of the 20th century, will be offered in celebration of his 100th birthday.

The chamber pieces Temporal Variations, The Wasp, The Grasshopper, Cello Sonata, Op. 65 and the oboe solo Six Metamorphoses After Ovid, Op. 49 will be played.

This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Pianist Kuang-Hao Huang has performed throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia. Huang is most often heard as a collaborator, performing concerts and radio broadcasts with Chicago's finest musicians, from instrumentalists of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to singers with the Lyric Opera. He has been a guest of the Chicago Chamber Musicians and has performed with the Avalon, Chicago, Spektral and Vermeer string quartets. He can be heard in recordings on the Cedrille and Naxos labels.

American cellist Natasha Farny performs as a soloist and chamber musician. Her playing has been described with the terms "beauty and strength" (Buffalo News), "eloquence" (Sunday Post-Journal) and "music ... with dozens of subtle flavors" (WNED public radio host, Peter Hall). Recent recitals include appearances in the Czech Republic, Chicago, New York City and Washington State, and concerto performances of works by Schumann, Haydn and Martinů. Farny is associate professor of cello at SUNY Fredonia. She has been honored there with several awards, including grants from the Faculty Student Association and the United University Professions, as well as the Hagan Young Scholar Artist Award for outstanding artistic performance. At Fredonia, in addition to teaching private cello, she coordinates the string chamber music program and oversees the Fredonia Cello Choir.

Anna Hendrickson is associate professor of oboe at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. As an orchestral player, Hendrickson performs regularly with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, and with the summer Britt Festival Orchestra in Jacksonville, Ore. She also plays principal oboe in the Orchestra of Northern New York. Her previous orchestral positions include the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. She is equally at home playing chamber music. Hendrickson has been selected to play at several International Double Reed Society Conferences as a member of chamber groups. She also has performed at the U.S. Embassy in Paris and the American Church in Paris, as well as the Château de Champs with pianist Mieko Hironaka Bergt, while spending a year in France as a Fulbright Scholar.
