Tribe: Non-members need permits to fish on Akwesasne waters

AKWESASNE -- As fishing season approaches, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe officials say they are reminding people who are not members of the tribe that they need a special permit to fish on territorial waters.

The non-member fishing permit regulation and law is enforced by the tribe’s Compliance Department and any violations may result in a fine and the fishing permit being revoked, the tribe said.

Non-Member Fishing Permits are available for an annual fee of $40 from the Compliance Department, which is on the third floor of the Community Building at 412 State Route 37, Akwesasne.

Tribal members have an “inherent and protected right” to fish on the territory’s waters, says an announcement from the tribe.

In 2014, tribal fishermen voiced their support for an amendment to the regulation specifying that non-members not be permitted to fish upstream from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River through the tribe's jurisdiction until June 1st of each year, which includes the St. Regis and Raquette rivers. They further voiced that non-members may not fish during a closed season for any species, the tribe said.

People with questions can contact the Compliance Department at (518) 358-2272.
