AKWESASNE—The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has endorsed Salmon River Board of Education candidate Agnes “Sweets” Jacobs in the Salmon River School Board Election Tuesday.
Jacobs is running for the seat currently held by Michael Conners, while a second seat currently held by Board President Sheila Marshall remains open for a write-in candidate.
“School board elections provide an opportunity for district voters to support a candidate who will give them a voice in decisions made by the school district,” said Tribal Chief Beverly Cook. Chief Cook added, “Agnes Jacobs has extensive community work experience and will ensure that all district residents have an active role in their children’s education.”
Jacobs currently serves as sub-chief on the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council and is actively involved in education, as all her children and grandchildren have or are still attending the St. Regis Mohawk School or Salmon River’s main campus, according to the endorsement statement from the tribe office.
Approximately 70 percent of the Salmon River student body is comprised of Native students enrolled with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. As a result, the Tribe is asking district residents to vote for Jacobs “to ensure that the voice of Akwesasne youth is represented on the school board,” the statement said.
