POTSDAM – A tree at the corner of Main and Market streets that was cut down Thursday will likely be replaced next spring.
The Potsdam Department of Public Works was putting up Christmas lights downtown when they noticed a fair amount of rot on the tree, according to DPW Supervisor Jim Corbett.
“In fact as they were attaching the lights, a four-or five-inch diameter branch broke off and dropped to the sidewalk,” Corbett said.
The workers called him for advice, “and I looked at it and told them to take it down.”
The removal of the tree raised some concerns by business owners, but “ultimately it was a safety issue,” Corbett said.
He said it would have been irresponsible “if we left it and knew about it.”
Corbett said the tree will probably be replaced in the spring.
