MASSENA -- Town Supervisor Joseph Gray proposed a resolution to ban smoking within 25 feet of the town hall after he says he asked six people smoking on the steps to move on Tuesday.
Councilman John Macaulay pointed out there is currently a state ban on smoking within 50 feet of all public properties, which would mean smokers would have to stand on the other side of the street.
“Somebody’s got to enforce it – it’s not enforced,” Councilman Albert Nicola said.
“I wish people would just be respectful … there’s cigarette butt depositories, they’re on the ground anyway,” Gray said, who added that he traditionally has been in favor of smoker’s rights, despite being a non-smoker.
“I’ve always said, ‘After they’re done with the smokers, they’re coming after the fat people next,’” Gray stated.
