POTSDAM – The Town of Potsdam has asked the Town/Village Planning and Development Office to provide an updated survey of substandard housing as the town considers filing for rehabilitation grant money.
Supervisor Marie Regan says the town may wish to submit an application for funds through the NYS Small Cities Community Development Block Grant program which can be used to rehabilitate substandard housing that is occupied by people of low to moderate incomes.
Regan said a 2009 survey found nearly 300 houses that appeared to be in substandard condition in the town outside of the villages of Potsdam and Norwood.
Regan says she would like to present to the board “a clearer picture of the housing in the rural areas of our town.”
CDBG funds are granted for repair or replacement of structural systems, and secondary systems such as lead-based paint hazard control work, roofing, siding, windows and doors, electrical, plumbing, heating and insulation. Also eligible are on-site wells and septic disposal systems.
To participate in the survey and receive an application for housing rehabilitation assistance, interested homeowners should contact the Potsdam Planning and Development Office at 265-1670.
