Town of Potsdam revising building code, looking at what other towns have done

POTSDAM -- The town will look at what other towns around the state have done to codify rules regarding solar energy installations and fencing, since more people seem to be inquiring about those issues.

“At this time of year especially, when people are building stuff” is when the questions on these and other matters come into his office, said Town of Potsdam Code Enforcement Officer Mike Boysuk.

But Boysuk has very little to tell people in the town about those things because there are very few specific requirements so far.

At this time of year, he says, he gets a call every two weeks or so from someone who wants to build a fence and comply with the local code, but there isn’t any regarding fences, and there should be, he said.

If people want to build a fence and live at a street intersection, they can’t build it any closer to the street than three feet, and it can’t be higher than 2.5 feet, so a driver’s view of traffic is not obstructed.

And if you want to open a junkyard, you have to be prepared to build an eight-foot high fence, “but that’s right in the junkyard permit,” and a separate local law doesn’t cover that.

Those were the only current requirements that came to mind, Boysuk said.

The town is doing the lengthy job of updating and reorganizing its code, and Boysuk said now would be a good time to include sections on those matters.

He, board members and the town clerk all agreed that they would investigate to see what other municipalities have done so they can try to avoid pitfalls or mistakes that may have been made along the way.
