POTSDAM -- The Town of Potsdam is joining a growing list of communities in New York state committing themselves to take action in the face of climate change.
The resolution was introduced by Councilor Rose Rivezzi at the board’s July 11 meeting.
It states that the town “”believes that climate change poses a real and increasing threat to our local and global environments.”
It further says that the response to climate change provides “an unprecedented opportunity to save money and to build a a livable energy-independent an secure community.”
The resolution says the town will adopt the New York State Climate Smart Communities agreement to implement 10 points. They are:
• pledge to be a Climate Smart Community
• set goals, inventory emissions, plan for climate action
• decrease community energy use
• increase community use of renewable energy.
• realize benefits of recycling and other climate-smart solid waste management practices
• reduce greenhouse gas emissions through use of climate-smart land-use tools
• enhance community resilience and prepare for the effects of climate change
• support development of a green innovation economy
• inform and inspire the public
• commit to an evolving process of climate action.
The resiliency promise refers to durability, primarily regarding the electric power grid and other infrastructure.
The town believes it can partner with village government to examine energy use and implement steps to reduce it, along with other facets of the orogram.
Other St. Lawrence County communities that have signed on to the program include the City of Ogdensburg, the Village of Canton, and the Village of Norwood.
