MASSENA -- The town will be taking over the boat launch on state Route 37 across from Alcoa east and officially opening it for public use.

Alcoa built the launch and several other in the area as a lawsuit settlement for damages they did to the Grasse and Raquette rivers. The deal called for them to install the facilities after remediating the damage from years of dumping toxic substances into the waterways.

“We’ve had it closed down all summer because we haven’t signed an agreement. It’s getting used anyway,” Town Supervisor Joseph Gray said.

There was some concern among the town board about liability.

“I think it’s a nice facility, will the town have liability going forward? Yes we will,” Gray said.

He noted that the town will have to mow and maintain the area when it’s in season.

“What happens if someone gets hurt out there?” Councilman Albert Nicola asked.

“We’re going to get sued, just like anywhere else,” Gray answered.
