MASSENA -- The Town Council on Wednesday voted to seek a full-time assessor who will serve a six-year term.
The board is looking to replace Assessor Mike Ward, who is planning to retire at the end of July.
Councilor Sam Carbone said the New York State Assessors Association made the recommendation for the full-time post.
"With that recommendation, and we have over 6,000 parcels ... New York State Department of Taxation recommends a six-year term,” Carbone told the board.
Carbone suggested their new hire may be able to assist in other areas related to the job.
"Some of our thoughts with this is so much is electronic now ... there might be time for other activities,” he said. “Let applicants know there may be other duties, if that's applicable. We want to make this an easier place to do business.”
He said some have already expressed interest in the job. "Word of mouth, we've already received a few applicants.”
O’Shaughnessy said Ward is willing to stay on board past his retirement date, if necessary.
