MASSENA -- The town is expecting to save $500,000 on its payment into the state retirement system, Bookkeeper Nancy Fregoe told the board Wednesday.
It was expected to come in around $3.7 million but will actually total about $3.15 million, she said.
That total includes all town and village employees plus Massena Memorial Hospital.
MMH’s yearly retirement payment was often cited by former CEO Charles Fahd as a reason to privatize the institution.
Councilman John Macaulay said because of how the payment is calculated, it should continue to drop in coming years because of cost-cutting measures by current CEO Robert Wollebin.
The basis for this year’s payment is salaries between March 2013 and March 2014.
“So these changes they’re making now won’t hit for a year-and-a-half … it should continue to be lower,” Macaulay said.
