CANTON – The town may have found a solution for its highway department’s space constraints for sand and salt storage.
The town board authorized Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley to sign off on a three-year lease/purchase agreement with All States Asphalt Inc. for eight acres at 12 Stiles Ave., next door to the town highway department facility. The agreement is subject to approval after review from the town attorney.
The go-ahead was approved by the board after they met in executive session following their regular meeting Wednesday, Nov. 14.
The town will pay $20,004 per year, with $416.67 of each month’s rent paid credited against the purchase price of $250,000.
Canton will pay the property taxes, insurance and utilities at the site.
Ashley said that All States will conduct a Phase I environmental assessment and, if needed, a Phase II study as well within 90 days of the agreement being signed.
The town can cancel the agreement with 30 days written notice if they feel either assessment is unsatisfactory.
The highway department’s space issues have been a regular discussion topic at board meetings for some time.
“The conversation has been going on for close to 20 years,” Ashley said. “It’s an opportunity. . . We are taking care of our departments.”
