Town of Canton makes annual appointments and committee assignments

CANTON -- The Town Council approved appointments of town officers and councilors’ committee assignments at its Jan. 25 meeting.

Appointments include:

• Town Attorney, Charles Nash

• Tax Collector, Registrar Of Vital Statistics, and Marriage Officer is Town Clerk Lisa Hammond

• Dog Control Officer, James Pipher

• Code Enforcement Officer; Russell B. Lawrence IV

• Health Officer, Dr. Daniel Palmateer

• EAP Officer, Denice Button.

Deputy supervisor is Paul Backus. Town historian is Linda Casserly. Eric Johnson and Russ Lawrence are appointed fire wardens.

Council members received their committee assignments at the meeting.

All four members, James T. Smith, Bob Washo, Philip LaMarche and Paul Backus, will serve on three “committees of the whole,” for assessments, banks, and insurance.

The audit committee, responsible for checking the operation and status of the various town accounts, will consist of members Backus and LaMarche in odd-numbered months and Smith and Washo in even-numbered months.

Councilor Backus will serve on the fire, budget, employee, justice, economic development and shared services committees.

Councilor LaMarche is assigned to the recreation, historical, justice, economic development, web and waterfront advisory/ brownfield opportunity area committees.

Councilor Smith will serve on the building, highway, fire, historical, employee and comprehensive committees.

Councilor Washo will sit on the highway, recreation, web, comprehensive, sustainability and shared services committees.

The board also set procedures for the town government.

Monthly meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m.

The official travel mileage allowance is 50 cents per mile.

The newspapers that will carry official announcements and legal notices are the St. Lawrence Plaindealer and the Watertown Daily Times.

The official depository is Community Bank.

On late payment of town bills, a surcharge of 1.5 percent on balances outstanding over 30 days may be levied.
