Thunderstorm warning continues this afternoon into tonight for St. Lawrence Valley; sunny, cooler Thursday

The hazardous weather outlook posted by the National Weather Service for the North Country continues into this evening warning of showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy downpours.

Stronger thunderstorms will produce torrential downpours and gusty winds. Ponding of water on roadways and in poor drainage areas can be expected this afternoon in areas affected by thunderstorms. Activity will weaken as it pushes east and south during the late evening hours.

Temperatures in the low to mid 80s this afternoon will drop into the mid 50s with a 30 percent chance of showers tonight.

It will be cooler and clear tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service, with temperatures in the mid 70s under sunny skies.

Thursday night is expected to be mostly cloudy with lows in the low 50s.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• This Afternoon: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. West wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 7pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 57. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

• Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52. Calm wind.

• Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

• Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 59. Light northeast wind.

• Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 73. Calm wind.

• Saturday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. Light northeast wind.

• Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Calm wind.

• Sunday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Light southeast wind.

• Monday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 71. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

• Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 58. Southwest wind around 7 mph.

• Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. West wind 8 to 13 mph.

• Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 53. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.
