Three week wait on decision to fix failing fire station floor in Massena

MASSENA -- It will be at least three weeks before the village can take action on fixing the failing fire station floor, according to Public Works Superintendent Hassan Fayad.

He said adjusters from Trident Insurance Company looked at the damage on Tuesday. They will report to the company and decide whether they will fill the village’s claim or send in their own engineering firm to size things up.

“The ball’s in motion. We’ve got to wait for … our insurance carrier,” Fayad said.

Although they didn’t take any official action at their January meeting, the trustees are eyeing $75,000 in repairs to the fire station garage bay floor.

Because of structural failure, the Massena Fire Department is keeping four of its six trucks in the garage, one outside the garage and the remaining one at the Department of Public Works.

The Fire Committee presented the board in January with five repair options. They said the best fix would be to expand the new portion of the garage toward Andrews Street and double stack the vehicles. It comes with a $786,000 price tag.

“I can’t see us at this point spending three-quarters of a million dollars,” Trustee Tim Ahlfeld said at the time.

The board seemed to agree that the best thing to do now is spend $75,000 to simply stabilize the damage.

At the time, Fire Chief Ted Krywanczyk said the department has had to change its response protocol around the structural issues.
