There appears to be some uncertainty about a U.S. Department of Education program that plans on giving three St. Lawrence County colleges awards totaling $806,000 for support services for students.

The department has announced awards totaling $806,000 to SUNY Canton, SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University to provide students with academic and other support services.

SUNY Canton is due $259,961, SUNY Potsdam $279,330 and Clarkson University $266,684, according to the news from the federal education authorities.

An earlier press release from Clarkson University indicated their grant would be $266,684 per year for five years, but there was no indication of the five-year term in the later press release from the Education Department.

A spokeswoman at the DOE said the program is indeed intended to be for five years, with the same amount being disbursed each year, but that the department was reluctant to state that in their press release owing to the vagaries of appropriations in Congress and the chance that the money for the program could be reduced in ensuing years.

The grants are aimed at helping increase the number of low-income college students, first-generation students and those with disabilities to successfully complete a program of study at the postsecondary level.
