MASSENA – An electric cord is being blamed for a fire that left three people homeless and caused extensive damage to a home on Parker Avenue Sunday morning, according to Massena Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bill Kearns.
The blaze at 35 Parker Avenue was reported to the fire department at 7:59 a.m. and firefighters were on scene a few minutes later.
A quick response limited the fire damage to two bedrooms, Kearns said.
St. Lawrence County Fire Investigators determined that the blaze started when an electrical cord attached to a heater somehow caught fire in a bedroom.

Flames spread to an adjacent bedroom where they were met by firefighters.
“Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the bedrooms and limit fire damage after battling the fire for about a half hour,” Kearns said.
There was smoke and water damage throughout the home.
Two adults, a 12-year-old and a dog all escaped without injury.
“There was no renters insurance and I am not sure about the building itself,” Kearns said.
Kearns said he was sworn in to the position of chief on Saturday night having been involved with the department before being named chief.
Massena firefighters were on scene for nearly two hours.
Massena Rescue and the Massena Police Department were also on scene with the Louisville Fire Department on standby at the Massena fire station.
