GOUVERNEUR – A multifamily residence in downtown Gouverneur was destroyed by fire last night.

Three injuries were reported. Two children and one man were treated and released, according to fire authorities.

Authorities had no estimate of the number of people living in the building at the time. The Red Cross and National Grid were called to the scene.

About a dozen fire companies and rescue squads responded in a vain attempt to save the building, at 48 Clinton St., at the intersection of Clinton -- State Rt. 58 – and Trinity Streets.

Firefighters from Gouverneur and Richville and Gouverneur Rescue responded to the alarm at 10:09 p.m. Elements of the Oxbow, Edwards, Harrisville, Antwerp, Theresa, Morristown, Canton, DeKalb, and Heuvelton fire departments joined the fight. Other elements of the DeKalb and Heuvelton departments, along with Rensselaer Falls and Hermon departments, were on standby.

The Gouverneur department reported back in service shortly after 6 a.m. today.

The origin of the fire is still under investigation.
