At least one debate appears to have been finalized between Democratic Congressman Bill Owens and Republican challenger Matt Doheny – far away from St. Lawrence County.
Both campaign staffs today confirmed they have agreed to a debate Sept. 25 in the Glens Falls area in the Queensbury High School auditorium, sponsored by the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Doheny, a Watertown businessman, also announced he has accepted invitations to debate in Plattsburgh and Watertown.
But James Hannaway of Owens’ campaign staff said the Plattsburgh congressman has received “roughly a dozen offers from community organizations, newspapers and tv stations.”
He continued, “We're still in the process of evaluating which offers would provide a fair, substantive and vigorous debate, and also work with our calendar."
Doheny spokesman Jude Seymour said the campaign has agreed to debate in “each media market” in the district, including Oct. 25 at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, hosted by YNN-tv. He said Doheny has also agreed to a debate in Plattsburgh hosted by WPTZ-tv at a “date and location to be determined.”
“This is the first we've heard from the Doheny camp,” countered Hannaway.
“We've agreed to a Washington Farm Bureau debate which is missing from this list,” he said. “If the Doheny campaign wants to talk debates, we're willing to have a conversation. So far, we've heard nothing from them except for a press release.”
