POTSDAM – Village police arrested three people who allegedly falsely reported a car accident as an April fool’s prank that caused the unnecessary response of several police, fire and rescue departments.
Matthew P. Williams, 19, Potsdam, Kevin D. Weems, 20, Norwood, and Brooke M. Labaff, 20, Norwood, were all charged with aggravated harassment, falsely reporting an incident and sixth-degree conspiracy.
They were issued appearance tickets for village court on April 27.
Police allege, on April 1, the three reported to a friend that they had been involved in a personal injury accident.
The friend reportedly became alarmed and notified St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch, eliciting the response of the state police, county sheriff’s office, Norwood Police department, Norwood Fire Department, Norwood First Responders and Potsdam Rescue Squad.
Investigation of the incident revealed it to be an April fool’s prank, village police report.
