CANTON -- Thousands of phone calls a day are being fielded by the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services for heating and other help.
The frigid weather of recent days has resulted in an overload of telephone calls to St. Lawrence County’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
The regular HEAP application period continues and people have begun applying for emergency benefits. Meanwhile nearly 900 applications for regular HEAP benefits were still being processed, as of Thursday, according to Bobbie Bessette, who manages the county’s HEAP program.
Bessette said calls have been coming in at a rate of “thousands a day,” some for HEAP applications, some following up on applications already made, and fielding other inquiries.
The telephone number for HEAP is 379-2297, but Bessette is asking for patience as there could be long wait times before people can get through.
