STAR LAKE – Ten Clifton-Fine students have been charged with trespassing after allegedly entering their school after-hours, padlocking doors shut and placing the key to the padlock around the neck of a rooster they set free within the building.

State police were called to the school Wednesday after the prank conducted by members of the graduating class was discovered. Police said a senior prank is an annual tradition at Clifton-Fine Central School.

The previous night, students had chained and padlocked two pairs of fire doors after entering the building through an unlocked window, police said.

The key to the padlocks was then placed on a rubber band placed around the neck of a live rooster, which was released into the partitioned portion of the hallway, police said.

In addition, students discharged several “party poppers,” which were left in the hallways of the school, police said.

The students also spray-painted graduation messages on plastic wrap stretched between the supporting pillars outside the school entrance door and hoisted a t-shirt up a flag pole, police said.

No school property was damaged, defaced or missing, no one was injured and the rooster was unharmed, police said.

Police said school officials “took the practical jokes with good humor, but drew a line at the unlawful entry to the premises.”

As a result, police charged the students with third degree criminal trespass, a class B misdemeanor.

Those charged include Emelia K. Boula, 18, Star Lake; Nichole M. Aldrich, 18, Fine; Devin M. Moore, 18, Cranberry Lake; Cole A. Tristram, 18, Newton Falls; Morgan J. Lawrence, 18, Star Lake; Evan T. Popham, 17, Cranberry Lake; Robert W. Cushing, 18, Star Lake; Ashley J. White, 17, Oswegatchie; Paul Q. Harris, 17, Newton Falls; and Nathan J. Aldrich, 16, Star Lake.

The students were released on appearance tickets and are to face the charges at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 14 in Fine Town Court.
