Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order protecting homeless people in St. Lawrence County and across the state from inclement winter weather where temperatures drop to 32 degrees or below.
The order will ensure that homeless individuals are directed to shelter during inclement winter weather which can cause hypothermia, serious injury and death.
It also requires homeless shelters to extend their hours of operations so that those without shelter can remain indoors.
The state will assist local social services districts if they are lacking facilities, resources or expertise, Cuomo said.
For local information about getting help for someone that is homeless contact St. Lawrence County Social Services at 379-2111 or the sheriff’s department at 379-2222.
