After a sunny and cold day today, it will be warmer Tuesday – near 40 degrees – and skies will cloud up and could deliver rain and snow to the St. Lawrence Valley tonight and tomorrow.

At most, according to the National Weather Service, accumulations probably won't amount to more than a couple of inches through Tuesday, but the forecast calls for a continuing chance of snow and rain through Thursday.

Winds, light and variable today, will pick up Tuesday and Wednesday, peaking Tuesday night with gusts possibly as high as 35 mph.

The forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: Sunny, with a high near 18. Southwest wind around 8 mph.

• Tonight: A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly after 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

• Tuesday: Rain and snow, becoming all rain after 3pm. High near 39. Breezy, with a southeast wind 7 to 12 mph becoming south 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

• Tuesday Night: A chance of rain and snow before 7pm, then a chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 18. Breezy, with a southwest wind 13 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

• Wednesday: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 27. West wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

• Wednesday Night: Scattered snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 4. West wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

• Thursday: Scattered snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 15. West wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

• Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 10. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.

• Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 30. Light and variable wind becoming northeast 5 to 7 mph in the morning.

• Friday Night: Cloudy, with a low around 19. East wind around 5 mph.

• Saturday: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 35. East wind 6 to 8 mph.

• Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 20. East wind around 5 mph becoming southwest after midnight.
