MASSENA -- A teen was charged Wednesday for allegedly assaulting and spitting on U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer.
Melinda D. Cook, 17, of Snye, Quebec, Canada is charged with third-degree assault and second-degree harassment.
Court documents state that she had been brought inside for a secondary inspection after returning to the U.S. from Cornwall and officers noticed she smelled of alcohol and had dilated pupils. They asked if she’d been drinking or smoking marijuana, which she admitted, court documents state.
She became belligerent and started yelling profanity, including calling the officers racist, court documents state.
She then started spitting on Customs officials and flailing her arms and legs as they attempted to bring her to a detention area and she ended up kicking one in the groin. Officers eventually had to put a spit shield on her, according to court documents.
Cook was arraigned in Massena court by Acting Justice James Crandall and released under supervision of the county Probation Department. She is to return to court on Dec. 28.
