TAUNY in Canton looking to raise $70,000 through spring fundraiser

CANTON -- TAUNY is hosting its annual spring fundraiser and is looking to fundraising $70,000 by June 30.

Through original research and a wide-range of public programs, the Canton-based nonprofit showcases the cultural traditions of the Adirondack-North Country. TAUNY operates The TAUNY Center on Main Street in downtown Canton. The multi-use facility is a venue for year-round changing exhibitions, workshops, children’s programs, lectures, demonstrations, music jams, concerts, and dances. It is also home to The North Country Folkstore, which promotes and is an outlet for the work of over 200 regional artisans and local producers. The TAUNY Center has become a regional tourist destination, with over 10,000 visitors annually. It is also a space for area residents to gather around local interests and concerns.

When asked what TAUNY means to them, local residents described TAUNY in the following ways:

"TAUNY has provided such a wonderful setting that opens its doors to showcase and experience live folk traditions, music, and educational and cultural varied exhibits for all to enjoy. They also seek to preserve the record of the stories of North Country residents and their everyday lives. I am appreciative of their technical assistance and knowledge as well as their warmth," says TAUNY North Country Heritage Award Recipient Loretta Lepkowski.

“I feel honored to be a part of what TAUNY does. As an artist I feel validated by TAUNY's recognition of my work. Showcasing artists in the North Country has benefited many artists and encouraged them in their own personal missions. I believe our community has been enriched by being able to view and get to know those who are the makers. For me, I am always pleased that my work can help finance such a wonderful and unique not for profit organization,” states North Country Artist Mary Harding.
