CANTON -- The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded $30,000 to Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) to produce video programs documenting North Country folk and traditional arts.

TAUNY is partnering with Mountain Lakes PBS in Plattsburgh to produce “From Shop to Screen” and the 10- to 15-minute programs, according to TAUNY Executive Director Jill Breit.

“We are trying to address a lack of video in our work relative to other formats. We have tried to present our research in a variety of formats for public consumption -- our website, displays, and working worth outside partners, most notably North Country Public Radio,” Breit said.

Breit said Mountain Lake PBS expressed an interest in what they are doing, and the idea was germinated.

The videos, of traditional artists in the region, will have TAUNY Program Director Hannah Harvester visiting studios and shops of selected artists and interviewing them to document their work.

Breit said they have a long list of artists but have not narrowed it down yet.

“We will present a range of art forms, allowing people to se what goes into the production of iconic regional products we take for granted,” Breit said.

In addition to broadcast of the programs, Breit said, the project will add “a lot of archival footage to our collection.”

The announcement of the NEA grant came from the office of Rep. Bill Owens.
