Suspected phone scammers keep hammering away at St. Lawrence County residents

OGDENSBURG -- An Ogdensburg resident is concerned that other people in the area are getting calls from someone claiming to be helping give out rebates and who wants his electric and gas account numbers.

The number he is getting calls from is 646-854-6970. “NYGE” comes up on the phone’s caller ID.

“The woman immediately pushes to get my account number for electric and gas bills claiming they are taking part in helping utility companies in giving out rebates,” he wrote.

Just last week St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells issued a warning to county residents about an apparent scam being perpetrated by people claiming to be from National Grid and demanding immediate bill payment by way of a prepaid money card.

Sheriff Wells relayed information from National Grid saying they do not conduct business that way.

A web site at http://800notes.com lists suspect caller ID numbers and includes comments from people who have been called from a specific number. Their page on this number contains comments.

One note they make is that the caller ID screen said NYEG; this is not NYSEG, New York State Electric and Gas.

“They claimed to be working with them to give a rebate up to 15 percent off---Then they asked if I was getting any assistance,” he wrote. “I said no and they said well good,” he said, and that was apparently the end of it, but commenters on the web page talked about a more insistent approach.
