The New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) North Chapter conducted a survey in February of illegal passing of school buses that found 14 violations in St. Lawrence County.
The survey was conducted the week of Feb. 12 through 16, with results from the districts or companies that responded to the survey.
St. Lawrence County schools reported 14 illegal passes of stopped school buses during the five days the survey was conducted. Several of those passes were in loading and unloading zones at school. Most were while buses were enroute picking up or dropping off students.
Potsdam had the most reported violations, seven illegal red light passes.
The results from St. Lawrence County:
• Clifton-Fine, no illegal passing
• Colton-Pierrepont, no illegal passing
• Edwards-Knox, 1 illegal red light pass
• Gouverneur Central, no illegal passing
• Madrid-Waddington, no illegal passing
• Massena Central, 1 illegal red light pass
• Morristown Central, no illegal passing
• Norwood-Norfolk, 3 illegal red light passes
• Potsdam Central, 7 illegal red light passes
• Parishville-Hopkinton, 2 illegal red light passes.
Frank Barney of NYAPT North wishes to remind drivers that it is illegal to pass stopped school buses with their red lights flashing on public roads, private roads, parking lots, and school grounds.
