The State University of New York has announced that about 20,000 current and former students, including those at Potsdam and Canton, will receive notices that they may be eligible for tuition refunds.

Students who paid non-resident tuition while eligible for the cheaper in-state rate between the fall of 2007 and the spring of 2011 will be eligible for refunds.

The refunds are the result of a recent class action settlement agreement in Strum, et al. v.. SUNY, et al. Two former Binghamton University students sued SUNY for refunds for themselves and other individuals entitled to a refund.

Students who may be eligible will receive a notice from SUNY in the next few weeks. Eligible students include those who graduated from an approved state high school or received a GED within the state and attended one of the SUNY schools covered by the refund between 2007 and 2011.

The affected SUNY campuses are Potsdam, Canton, University of Albany, Alfred State, Binghamton, Brockport, University at Buffalo, Buffalo State, Cobleskill, Cortland, Delhi, Downstate Medical Center, Empire State College, Environmental Science & Forestry, Farmingdale State, Fredonia, Geneseo, Maritime, Morrisville State, New Paltz, Old Westbury, Oneonta, Optometry, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Purchase, Stony Brook SUNY IT and Upstate Medical University.

Eligible students must submit a Claim Form by Sept. 4 to classrefund@suny.edu, Claims Administrator, SUNY Plaza, 353 Broadway, Albany, NY 12246 or fax to 518-320-1544.

Under the agreement, SUNY has also made its notices and publications on the costs of attendance clearer, so that students will be aware of their eligibility for the in-state tuition rate.
