POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam has appointed John M. Wicke to focus on the college’s effort to capitalize on Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Start-Up NY economic development initiative.
His title will be Director of Strategic Alliances.
Wicke says that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s “exciting new initiative Start-Up NY provides major tax incentives for businesses to locate in the North Country.
“Given today's challenges, it is paramount to build upon the great legacy of SUNY Potsdam's exceptional education and combine it with regional economic development efforts,” Wicke said.
The governor’s Start-Up NY initiative proposes to promote business startups on college campuses or other sites, making available college resources and temporarily relieving the company and employees of tax obligations to state and local governments.
SUNY Potsdam has designated three areas as possible future business sites through Start-Up NY, including Lehman Park and Natco Park, which are both college property, as well as the Potsdam Commerce Park, near the airport in the village.
Wicke joined the college in 2011 as a development officer, a job he will keep in addition to his new duties. He is to work with community leaders, SUNY Potsdam alumni, business owners and entrepreneurs.
Wicke attended Potsdam as a student prior to graduating from Clarkson University.
People may contact Wicke at wickejm@potsdam.edu or 267-2106 to find out more about SUNY Potsdam's Start-Up NY efforts.
