POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam University Police have turned over all of their information as the state Attorney General’s Office takes over investigation of the hate crime cases at the school.

District Attorney Mary Rain said this comes on the heels of her request that the state take over the case.

“Due to the crime occurring at a state facility the ramifications go beyond the bounds of St. Lawrence County.” Rain said. “The Attorney General's Office has reviewed the case and agrees with me that this case is more appropriately handled by a state agency.”

She did not immediately respond to a request to clarify what those ramifications are.

Police are investigating several death threats against a black LGBTQ professor, John Youngblood. The threats, which the school described as “racist, homophobic vitriol,” were made in April and November.

In the April threats, police have charged former SUNY Potsdam student Amjad Hussain with two felony counts of aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

There have been no arrests in the November incident, which happened after Hussain was charged.

St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain requested the AG’s office take over the case the day after Hussain’s arrest.
