POTSDAM – SUNY Potsdam has appointed a new second-in-command.

Bette S. Bergeron is to be the college's next provost and vice president of academic affairs. She is currently the provost at Southern Connecticut State University.

She was selected for the position through a nationwide search, which began in April 2015, after former Provost Margaret E. Madden left to take a position as the provost at Siena College.

“Dr. Bergeron brings a wealth of expertise and experience that will inform and strengthen SUNY Potsdam's mission driven curriculum and leadership in innovative high-impact programing for students,” SUNY Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg said.

In making the announcement, Esterberg thanked Judith Kirkpatrick for her service as interim provost, a role she has served in since July.

Bergeron is scheduled to begin March 1, 2016. "It is a tremendous honor to be joining the SUNY Potsdam family,” she said. “I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, students, and the North Country community in fostering the institution's continued commitment to access and academic excellence,”

“Dr. Bergeron's background in education as well as her creativity in looking at the future of higher education makes her a good fit for SUNY Potsdam's creative culture and commitment to student success through faculty excellence, supportive learning environments and hard work,” said Dr. Alan Hersker, professor of anthropology and chair of the provost search committee.

Before her posting at Southern Connecticut, Bergeron was dean of the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Before that, she held positions as the associate dean of East College, and director of the School of Educational Innovation and Teacher Preparation and professor of education at Arizona State University Polytechnic. Bergeron also previously served as a professor of education at Purdue University Calumet.

She earned her bachelor's degree in education at the University of Maine, and went on to complete both her master's degree and her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction at Purdue.
