SUNY Potsdam named military friendly school by two magazines

POTSDAM -- Two organizations have included SUNY Potsdam on their “military friendly schools” lists.

G.I. Jobs Magazine and another magazine, Military Advanced Education & Transition (MAE&T), have endorsed SUNY Potsdam and included them on their lists.

The lists note the top colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom after graduation.

More than 150 active-duty service members, veterans and their families members are currently enrolled as SUNY Potsdam students, either on the Potsdam main campus or through the college’s Extension Center in Watertown, on the campus of Jefferson Community College in close proximity to Fort Drum. Soldiers, veterans and their families are enrolled in a number of undergraduate and graduate programs at SUNY Potsdam, with one of the more popular majors being teacher education.

Through the work of the college-wide Veteran and Military Task Force, SUNY Potsdam has enhanced a variety of services and implemented procedures to meet the specific needs of military members and their families. Under the leadership of Patrick Massaro, veterans and military services coordinator for both SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton, the programs have consistently been recognized with the military-friendly designation. A graduate of both institutions, and a captain in the U.S. Marine Reserves, Massaro said, “we work hard to be a reliable resource for individuals who are transitioning into the next phase of their careers.”

“SUNY Potsdam recognizes the importance of investing in our service men and women and their families. They are critical members of our North Country community in every way,” said SUNY Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg. “We are so proud of the work being done in our Military/Veteran Student Services Office and the Student Success Center as well as across the campus to advance the education and careers of these students.”
