SUNY Potsdam accepting applications for new graduate program in management

POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam will soon launch an interdisciplinary graduate program leading to a master of science degree in management.

“The flexible degree will prepare students to be leaders in a broad range of careers and industries, giving them a strong knowledge base in management and organizational principles,” the college said in a press release.

Beginning next spring, the master's program will be offered in two locations, the college's Potsdam campus, and at the Jefferson Higher Education Center, located on the Jefferson Community College campus in Watertown. All classes will be offered at night or online.

"The MS management program is not just for business students, or those who want to manage a business, but rather, for anyone who wants to know how to bring people and resources together to efficiently and effectively reach a goal. This includes those with career aspirations in the military, government, non-profit organizations, higher education or entrepreneurs in any field. I can speak for everyone in our department in saying that we are both excited and proud to offer a new and innovative Master of Science graduate program in management at SUNY Potsdam," said Dr. Anthony Betrus, a professor of business administration, who will oversee the new program.

Depending on their career interests, students in SUNY Potsdam's management program will be able to choose from in-demand three tracks:

• Information technology: A key factor in any institution's success today is the effective implementation of technology to drive initiatives and spur growth. This program will equip students with sought-after skillsets, thanks to coursework in cybersecurity, information architecture, computer programming for performance support, network management and advanced web development.

• Organizational leadership: This program will prepare students to take the lead in an array of fields, with coursework in teambuilding, organizational communications, project management, conflict resolution, change processes, entrepreneurship, innovation, social media strategy and delivering professional presentations. Students may also elect to complete the St. Lawrence Leadership Institute as part of this program.

• Training & human capital development: Students will learn how to guide others to reach their fullest potential, through coursework in staff development, human resources, critical issues in leadership, technology coaching, principles of performance, systematic instructional design, instructional development and program evaluation.

Students in the management graduate program will benefit from working closely with the college's full-time faculty, all of whom have years of professional working experience to draw upon, Betrus said. Internship opportunities are also available, through the Lougheed Center for Applied Learning.

The management program consists of 36 credits and takes two years for a full-time student to complete. Admission is on a rolling basis, and students can start in either the spring, fall or summer semesters. To find out more, visit www.potsdam.edu/academics/SOEPS/BusinessAdmin/mgmt.
