CANTON – SUNY Canton is abuzz this morning with rumors of a shooting threat to the college being spread on a social media site.

But the college’s president, Zvi Szafran, says there is no credible evidence of substance to the threat.

“We recognize the concern about the recent threat that came over the anonymous social media site, YikYak. There is no evidence at this point that the threat is either credible or imminent. SUNY Canton will be holding classes and activities as scheduled,” said Szafran in an email to staff and students this morning.

He said university police are investigating the incident. “YikYak has been contacted, and its staff are working with University Police to identify the individual responsible,” Szafran said.

A college spokesman said more details will be available soon.

Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to report it to University Police at 386-7777 or police@canton.edu.
