CANTON -- The magazine Learning By Design recently recognized SUNY Canton and more than 50 other schools nationwide with a 2015 Outstanding Project award for its residence hall renovation project.
The college says it was commended for its adaptive reuse of its existing facilities. The roofs, walls and exterior doors of four dormitories were completely replaced, but the structures retained their overall design. The entryways were remodeled to match the nearby academic buildings, SUNY Canton said.
The architectural team at C&S Engineers, Inc. chose multicolored synthetic slate shingles made by DaVinci Roofscapes to replace the residences' drab cement-tile roofs. The application was so successful that DaVinci featured SUNY Canton's residence halls on their website to showcase their product.
Learning by Design in a publication showcasing architectural projects at schools around the country. Twice each year, they solicit firms to submit school projects and publishes stories about them with photos for a fee. The entry form can be viewed on their website. Each submission published in the magazine’s spring edition received an award.
