CANTON -- SUNY Canton has received a $150,000 grant that will help students interested in pursuing science, math, technology and health-related fields.

The grant, from the New York State Education Department, is for starting a Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) on campus. SUNY Canton joins 48 other colleges and universities throughout New York State that have the program as an additional resource for students.

"CSTEP's success has been proven since its inception 25 years ago as students involved with the program have gone on to be highly successful in their career paths of choice," said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy.

CSTEP is a scholars program designed to prepare minority and economically-disadvantaged students for careers in scientific, technical, engineering, mathematical, health-related and licensed professions. The program emphasizes academic preparation and achievement and career awareness. Eligible students must be in good academic standing, enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at the college, and a New York State resident.

The program is free for students since costs are covered by the Education Department and SUNY Canton. Students in the program must maintain a grade-point average (GPA) of 2.0 or above, meet with a CSTEP administrative member monthly, and attend and participate in at least one CSTEP or related event per semester.

The college is speaking with interested students who will begin their work with CSTEP at the beginning of the Spring 2012 semester. The program has 75 slots.

The grant will help fund student tours of businesses, conferences across the state, workshops, and the purchase of laptops, eBooks and textbooks. The college will be able to offer stipends for internships and research opportunities, and hire them as tutors on campus.

The grant will also cover the costs of licensing fees, graduate school exam preparation costs, and admission application fees.
