CANTON -- SUNY Canton’s footbridges will be closed starting Monday as the college begins renovations to the structures.
They are updating its bridges with timber-framed covered walkways, so they will be closed this summer for the work to proceed.
The footbridges span the Grasse River and connect the college to downtown Canton.
The estimated completion date is Aug. 10, shortly before the start of the fall semester.
“The new bridges will add to the atmosphere of the walking paths and islands bordering our campus,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “We’ve selected a design similar to the pedestrian bridge spanning the Kicking Horse River in Golden, British Columbia (Canada).”
The footbridge replacement project is one of about seven projects underway at SUNY Canton, aimed at making the campus more attractive, more educationally accommodating, and more energy efficient.
The college’s footbridges were opened in the late 1960s. They have been a SUNY Canton landmark.
