Sunday Rock Legacy Project working to produce musical for summer event in Colton

COLTON — Town workers and businesses are to be celebrated with a stage production this summer, say local organizers.

The Sunday Rock Legacy Project team (SRLP), a local community collaboration to promote Colton’s history and culture, has obtained a 2017 grant from the St. Lawrence Country Arts Council, along with funding from New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, to produce the musical “Working” this summer.

The play will be part of the theme of the group’s official 2017 project “All Geared Up,” which will celebrate the businesses and people who have helped make the town a success.

Auditions will be held the first weekend in April. Performances are scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, July 20, 21, and 23. The stage director will be Elaine Kuracina. Lorie Gruneisen will be the music director.

“Working” is based on the Studs Terkel book of the same name, and tells the stories of workers with words, song and dance.

Project planners say the production will be a “funky and fun” theater-in-the-round, set on a flatbed truck in the Colton Old Fire House. Music is by several composers including Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin’, Wicked), James Taylor and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton).

SRLP, now in its sixth year, is a collaboration of the Colton Historical Society, Grasse River Players, and Colton-Pierrepont Central School to pursue historical, theatrical and educational activities of interest under a unifying theme.

SRLP planners hope to rely on the continued financial support of major sponsors as well as support from individuals, families and businesses.
