CANTON – A Canton Central student was removed from the school today pending a police investigation into an alleged threat the student made on a social media site.
“Today, Canton Central School learned of an alleged threat made by a high school student on social media,” said an emailed statement from school superintendent William Gregory. “With safety being our first priority, we immediately informed the Canton Police Department and turned the matter over to law enforcement. No one was harmed or directly threatened by the student.”
The student and the online social media platform allegedly used to make the threat were not identified.
Canton police declined further comment on the incident and ongoing investigation, but indicated they would release a statement to the media tomorrow morning.
“We understand situations such as this are troubling to our parents, students, and community. We want to ensure you that school administration has, and will continue to take all proper actions required by law and that are in the best interests of our students and our staff,” Gregory said.
The superintendent said the school was unable to comment further at this time due to the ongoing investigation, but that updates on the incident would be shared when appropriate.
