CANTON – Student filmmakers attending colleges in St. Lawrence County have a chance to shine in the first ever Associated Colleges Student Film Competition.

The event will be a prelude to the upcoming St. Lawrence International Film Festival, which will be held in October, according to festival executive director Adam M. Paul.

Paul said the event is open only to students currently enrolled in good standing at the region’s four colleges – St. Lawrence University, SUNY Canton, SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University. He said the competition invites student filmmakers to submit projects no longer than five-minutes in total running time to compete against each other at their respective colleges.

Winners and Honorable Mentions will be selected by faculty judges at each school and announced May 4, 2015.

Winners will go on to compete against each other in a special screening program at the First Annual St. Lawrence International Film Festival in October, where the Best Student Film will be selected by the Festival’s jury of film industry professionals.

Submissions will be accepted online only via the festival’s website, www.stlawrencefilm.com, until to April 24. The competition is free of charge.

Paul said engaging the student population will be a boon for the festival.

“A key component of this Festival’s success will be how meaningfully we engage the region’s students, faculty and staff,” Paul said. “This competition is a way to involve the incredible creative talent of the Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley from the inception of the Festival forward.”

Highlights of the festival will include cross-border tribute film screenings, curated competitive screenings in major categories, an opening night gala, an awards ceremony, nightly parties, and filmmaker Q & A’s.

The festival will be funded by a combination of corporate and individual sponsorships and ticket sales. Interested sponsors should contact the Festival Business Development office at (844) 753-4567 ext. 1.
