Storm could drop a foot of wet snow in the St. Lawrence Valley tonight and Wednesday

The storm we’ve been hearing about for a few days is approaching from the southwest, and will likely begin as rain this evening. It is bringing snow probably mixed with sleet and freezing rain at times over the next couple of days.

A winter storm warning from the National Weather Service has at this hour gone into effect for the St. Lawrence Valley and the northern Adirondacks and will remain posted until at least Thursday morning.

It is warning of heavy snow and mixed precipitation with accumulation of 6 to 12 inches of heavy wet snow; light accumulations of sleet and ice are also possible. The maximum snowfall rate could be up to a half inch per hour and visibilities could drop to a half a mile at times in heavier snowfall, according to the NWS.

Light to moderate snow will move into the area tonight and mix with sleet and freezing rain at times on Wednesday, and then back to all snow later Wednesday afternoon, continuing through early Thursday morning.

Winds will be increasing, from the northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph mainly Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Temperatures will be fairly steady tonight and Wednesday in the lower to mid 30s. Lows Wednesday night will be 10 to 20 above zero.

The sun could make an appearance Thanksgiving afternoon, with a high only about 20, and lows that night in the single digits.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Late Afternoon today: A 20 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 39. South wind around 7 mph.

• Tonight: Rain and snow before 11pm, then snow between 11pm and 2am, then sleet after 2am. Low around 31. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming northeast after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

• Wednesday: Snow and sleet before 1pm, then rain and snow between 1pm and 4pm, then snow after 4pm. High near 33. North wind 8 to 11 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

• Wednesday Night: Snow, mainly before 5am. Low around 15. Northwest wind 11 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

• Thanksgiving Day: A 30 percent chance of snow showers before 8am. Partly sunny, with a high near 20. West wind 11 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 8. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light southwest after midnight.

• Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 21. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning.

• Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 0. Calm wind.

• Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 21. Calm wind becoming east around 6 mph in the afternoon.

• Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. Southeast wind around 7 mph.

• Sunday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 33. South wind around 8 mph.

• Sunday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 27. South wind 6 to 8 mph.

• Monday: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 37. South wind around 6 mph.

• Monday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 26. East wind around 7 mph.

• Tuesday: A chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. East wind around 7 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
