Stefanik campaign apologizes for listing two St. Lawrence County officials as supporters when they aren't

A spokesman for Elise Stefanik's congressional campaign has apologized for including on a list of supporters the names of two Democrats who say they do not endorse her re-election to Congress.

The campaign office released a list on Friday of what they said were the names of 84 elected office holders from St. Lawrence County who were endorsing her run for a second term.

"The campaign apologizes for the oversight, and has publicly updated its website" to reflect the change in the number to 82 "top Republican, Democrat and Independent St. Lawrence County officials (who) have endorsed Elise Stefanik, not 84," said Lenny Alcivar, a member of the Elise for Congress campaign, which is working for the re-election of Stefanik, R-Willsboro, in the North Country's 21st District.

The list was cut by two after Norwood Village Trustee Mike Zagrobelny and Potsdam Town Supervisor Rollin Beattite, two Democrats, told NorthCountryNow.com they had been asked by campaign workers to endorse Stefanik. The two say they told the callers they did not support her.

“I never endorsed her,” Zagrobelny said Friday night.

“I didn’t endorse her either,” said Beattie Saturday morning.

"Since your story came out, our list has been updated to reflect the 82 endorsements. You can also add that this was a staff error for which the campaign has apologized," said Alcivar in an email response Saturday afternoon.

The campaign website still says the list is 84 names long, but Zagrobelny and Beattie have been removed from it.

The first story, with the complete list of names, is here.
