The New York State Police issued more than 17,000 tickets during this year's St. Patrick's Day enforcement initiative in the North Country and around the state.
The campaign ran for 143 hours, from Saturday, March 12 through Thursday, March 17.
Troopers arrested 257 people for driving while intoxicated and investigated 947 accidents. In those accidents, 243 people were hurt and four were killed, according to a press release.
During the campaign, troopers issued:
• 6,422 speeding tickets
• 627 distracted driving tickets
• 503 seatbelt violation tickets, and
• 159 tickets for violations of the "move over" law.
In the campaign, troopers used sobriety checkpoints, extra DWI patrols, and underage drinking and sales to minors details. They also ticketed drivers distracted by handheld electronic devices.
During last year's St. Patrick's Day campaign, which ran for 120 hours, troopers issued 14,113 tickets and arrested 264 people for DWI.
