NORFOLK -- A state police officer who drove through an intersection causing an accident that severely injured Brasher Falls woman, will not be ticketed, according to state police.

On March 2, 2016, trooper Leah G. Malbeuf, 25, was responding to a call for service while operating her patrol vehicle county Route 49. She failed to stop at the stop sign and struck a vehicle, operated by Cathy A. Ashlaw, 60, of Brasher Falls, who was traveling northeast on county Route 38.

Malbeuf did not have her emergency lights or sirens activated.

Ashlaw, who was the sole occupant of her vehicle at the time of the collision, was transported to Massena Memorial Hospital with a fractured left shoulder and elbow, and serious internal injuries.

She was later airlifted by LifeNet to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont for further treatment.

Such flights can often cost more than $40,000.

Malbeauf was transported to the Canton-Potsdam Hospital for a finger laceration, neck pain and bruising.

The investigation into the accident took months as an state accident reconstruction team worked to determine the details of the accident.

It is unclear whether Malbeuf faced internal disciplinary measures related to the accident.

“We conduct a full investigation into any accident involving our personnel and we cannot comment on disciplinary actions,” a state police spokeswoman said.

Malbeuf began her career with the New York State Police on March 5, 2015.
