Over the course of several days this week, the state police of Troop B, Zone 2 have been compiling lists of every traffic ticket troopers issue in a day in St. Lawrence County and offering that list to local media.

Never has there been such a comprehensive look at what troopers in St. Lawrence County do to enforce vehicle and traffic law, and it is unique because no other state police unit is doing it.

“We’re doing it just so people can see that the state police are actually working” beyond the more dramatic stories people might see in the newspaper or online, said Zone 2 Commander Capt. Michael Girard.

The lists so far, for daily activity from last Saturday through Tuesday, have the names of the drivers who were given the tickets, the offenses, and where they were stopped. The lists have included dozens of names each day. Girard said a request for something like this list came from an unnamed media outlet, “so we just picked a few days to give people a little taste of what we do,” Girard said.

Among the benefits of compiling and releasing the list, Girard said, is that people will see that troopers are enforcing laws against things like driving down the road with a cell phone to your ear or driving and texting.

“We want people to know if we see you, you’re going to get a ticket. We want to emphasize the aggressive law enforcement, and that driver inattention can kill,” Girard said.

But Girard said the public relations campaign is about to end.

The trooper who has been compiling the lists has been on light duty after surgery, and is about ready to get back on the road, so there will be no one to continue the project.

“But we’ll have another 70 or so for you today,” Girard said Thursday.
