State police Troop “B” will join police counterparts throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico to participate in the International Road Check 2012 commercial vehicle enforcement initiative June 5-7.

International Road Check 2012 is a joint effort sponsored by the federal Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance in which agencies throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico conduct comprehensive inspections of commercial motor vehicles along major highways.

State troopers have participated in this event for several years and support the program’s aims.

In Troop “B,” Commander Major Richard Smith said he has directed all members of the local Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit to participate in the program.

Commercial vehicle inspectors from the state Department of Transportation will join troopers at these road checks. Together, they plan to inspect all of the commercial vehicle traffic encountered at a number of checkpoints across the troop. Roving enforcement activities are also anticipated.

“Given the proximity of Troop “B” to trade routes with neighboring Canadian provinces and the major motor carrier traffic within our Troop, this initiative is very valuable in the furtherance of the New York State Police mission priority of ensuring highway safety,” said Smith.
