State police to beef up patrols at Canton Planned Parenthood, others throughout NY

There will be an increased police presence at Canton’s Planned Parenthood clinic at 9 Miner St., along with others throughout the state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today.

The extra security measures follow a terrorist attack last week at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, Colo. where a gunman killed three people.

“Our top priority is the safety of our patients and staff,” Planned Parenthood of the North Country New York CEO Tess Barker said in a prepared statement sent out Monday afternoon. She did not return an earlier phone call from NorthCountryNow requesting an interview. “Here in New York state and across the country, Planned Parenthood has strong security measures in place, works very closely with enforcement agencies and has a very strong safety record.”

Cuomo’s office said state police, local law enforcement agencies and Planned Parenthood leaders around the state were to have met today to discuss security and increased patrols of clinics.

“While we are still learning more about what led to this horrendous attack in Colorado, we are taking appropriate precautions and doing everything possible to prevent similar tragedies from taking place in our state,” Cuomo said. “The state police will be patrolling clinics across New York on Monday, and our administration is working closely with dedicated Planned Parenthood staff and our local partners to ensure the safety of these health centers throughout the state.”
